B Street Band Music Without Borders

The B-Street Band debuted as “Backstreets“ on May 19, 1980 in Asbury Park, NJ for an audience of over 2000 Bruce fans. From the heart of the Jersey shore, “Backstreets” was the first band in the world to do a unique tribute to a live performer. There are now an estimated 140,000 tribute bands following their lead and performing all over the world. Nearly 6000 performances later, now named the BSTREETBAND—they are still the hardest working tribute band on the circuit with 175+ shows per year throughout the country.

Madeleine Peyroux

Thursday, October 4, 2018 at 7:30 pm

MadeleinePeyroux MusicWithoutBorders SOPAC

Madeleine Peyroux’s musical journey is truly compelling, and reflects her independent spirit.  Known for her dusky, lyrical style, and affinity for reinterpreting classic Jazz, Blues, and Folk standards, Madeleine Peyroux is an artist who gazes fearlessly into the depths of a song and reflects back a searing emotional truth.

Emerging in her teens as a street-busking performer in Paris’ Latin Quarter in the 1980s, Madeleine Peyroux drew favorable comparisons to legendary Jazz singer Billie Holiday, and eventually caught the attention of the record industry. Her debut album, 1996’s Dreamland, featured a noted Jazz artists and drew accolades for her distinctive take on Blues and Jazz standards. Overwhelmed by her initial success, the singer took time off before returning with her diverse sophomore album, 2004’s Larry Klein-produced Careless Love. Since then, she has continued to cut a low-key, if no less lauded career path, releasing a handful of highly regarded albums.

Eight albums and 22 years since her debut Dreamland, Madeleine Peyroux continues to challenge the confines of Jazz, venturing into contemporary music with unfading curiosity.

Madeleine Peyroux’s new album, Anthem, finds the singer-songwriter collaborating with writers/musicians Patrick Warren (Bonnie Raitt, JD Souther, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Lana Del Rey, The Red Hot Chilli Peppers), Brian MacLeod (Sara Bareilles, Leonard Cohen, Tina Turner, Ziggy Marley) and David Baerwald (Joni Mitchell, David and David, Sheryl Crow), who are also the basic rhythm section players on the album. Together, they cast a sober, poetic, and at times philosophical eye on the current state of the world.  Anthem weaves the colorful stories of people confronting life’s challenges in a multitude of ways.

Anthem is Peyroux’s “biggest project to date,” with the artist investing many months of hands-on involvement in the studio, “exploring processed sounds and editing in post tracking.”

Notably, it was written with the group of musicians/writers who also played on it, “this album was about discovering the original songs as they were being recorded” and mastering the courage to “let the songs choose their own path.”

The new album includes several songs bearing Peyroux’s distinctive style including “On My Own” and “Sunday Afternoon,” but Anthem’s spirit was that of exploring new styles while safe in the knowledge that “if you are loyal to yourself, there should always be a thread running through your music.”

Anthem stands as Peyroux’s greatest work to date."
-Glide Magazine August 2018 9 out of 10 stars

“A triumphant mix of the personal and the political.”
-The Sunday Times (UK) 26 August 2018

“ANTHEM is an exhilarating trip – bold, intense, deeply insightful”
-Jazz Times September 2018

“These are, by and large, everyman anthems, survivalist jazz for tough times. Drugs, booze, and a miscellany of hardships and crutches loom large in such selections as ‘Party Tyme’, ‘Down on Me’, ‘On a Sunday Afternoon’ and the cautiously hopeful ‘The Ghosts of Tomorrow’.”
-Jazz Times September 2018

“There’s more than an echo of Steely Dan in the combination of smooth jazz and raw lyricism. In fact, Brand New Deal’s elegant swipe at American capitalism could easily have come straight off the Dan’s Gaucho LP but it’s Peyroux’s insouciant voice that haunts the listener.”
-Sunday Express (UK) 28 August 2018

"The most ambitious project by Madeleine Peyroux to date."
-Jazzethik Germany 28 August 2018

“Sensual vocals hit the spot”
-The Arts Desk UK  27 August 2018

“It’s Peyroux’s insouciant voice that haunts the listener”
-Sunday Express UK 26 August 2018

“Inspired by one of the greats, Peyroux is Cohen her own way”
-Metro UK 30 August 2018

“Peyroux has developed her vocal style and into the third decade of her career, she is her own artist; to borrow a Cohen line, this is Peryoux’s own ‘manual for living with defeat’.”
-Metro UK 30 August 2018

“On Sunday night she invited us into her world, studding the lyrics with playful asides and half-whispered confessions to lend each song an air of intimacy. Her rapport with her band felt as natural as her wondrously elastic phrasing, and her music exuded a languid warmth that was balm for the ears.”
-Performance at Hamer Hall Melbourne International Jazz Festival – The Sydney Morning Herald by Jessica Nicholas June 2018

"Darlene Love's thunderbolt voice is as embedded in the history of rock and roll as Eric Clapton's guitar or Bob Dylan's lyrics." ~ The New York Times

Through the years, Darlene Love continues to captivate audiences worldwide with her warm, gracious stage presence and superb performances. She returns to Landmark's Jeanne Rimsky Theater for an unprecedented seventh consecutive appearance, this time bringing the Love with her Valentine Tour.

Since the early sixties, as part of Phil Spector's wall of sound hit factory, this great lady has done it all...from major motion pictures like the highly successful Lethal Weapon series to Broadway hits like Hairspray and Grease. She even starred as herself in Leader Of The Pack, credited as Broadway's first 'jukebox musical.'

In the early years, Darlene's background vocals as lead singer for The Blossoms behind The Righteous Brothers, Dionne Warwick, Marvin Gaye, Frank Sinatra and Elvis Presley (to name but a few) set the stage for her emergence as a star in her own right.

Her Billboard hits include: He's A Rebel, The Boy I'm Gonna Marry, Wait 'Til My Bobby Gets Home, He's Sure the Boy I Love and the #1 holiday classic Christmas Baby Please Come Home, a song that she performed annually The Late Show With David Letterman for some 29 years.

Featured in 2013's Academy Award winning documentary 20 Feet from Stardom, Darlene sang her powerful acceptance speech on behalf of all of the performers in the film. As she raised the Oscar, the entire house stood with a cheering ovation lead by the wildly applauding Bill Murray. It was another special moment in a great career. A Grammy award soon followed for the soundtrack of the film.

Darlene Love received her industry's highest award when Bette Midler, a great fan of her work, inducted her into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. During the celebration, the two ladies enjoyed performing He's A Rebel together. As part of the festivities, Darlene also sang He's A Fine, Fine Boy backed by another distinguished fan, Bruce Springsteen. Rolling Stone Magazine has proclaimed Darlene Love to be "one of the greatest singers of all time" and that certainly rings true, but perhaps Paul Shaffer says it even more concisely: "Darlene Love is Rock N' Roll!"

Willie Nile has toured across the U.S. with The Who and has sung with Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band. As the induction program from the Buffalo Music Hall of Fame says: “His live performances are legendary.”

The New York Times called Willie Nile “one of the most gifted singer-songwriters to emerge from the New York scene in years.” Uncut Magazine called him “A one-man Clah.” His album Streets Of New York was hailed as “a platter for the ages” by UNCUT magazine. Rolling Stone listed The Innocent Ones as one of the “Top Ten Best Under-The-Radar Albums of 2011” and BBC Radio called it “THE Rock ‘N Roll album of the year.” His single from that album, “One Guitar,” was the “Top Pick of the Week” in USA Today.

Bono, Bruce Springsteen, Pete Townshend, Lou Reed, Lucinda Williams, Jim Jarmusch, and Little Steven are among those who have sung his praises.

His album, American Ride, won “Best Rock Album of the Year” at the Independent Music Awards. It appeared on dozens of year-end Top Ten lists for 2013 and was voted “Album Of The Year” at Twangville Magazine. Bono called it, “One of the great guides to unraveling the mystery that is the troubled beauty of America.”

In November 2014 Willie Nile released a new album of piano-based songs, If I Was A River, to universal critical acclaim. “One of the most brilliant singer-songwriters of the past thirty years” said The New Yorker. Uncut called him “the unofficial poet laureate of New York City.”

The best singer-songwriters serve the song. The songwriter’s songwriter, James Maddock, who has earned the respect of masterful writers such as Bruce Springsteen and Willie Nile, has built his acclaimed legacy on humbly honoring purity of expression. Many albums in his beloved catalog are elegantly spare, conveying his songs and sentiments in the most direct possible way.

He’s performed with Bruce Springsteen, Willie Nile, Aaron Comess (Spin Doctors) and David Immergluck (Counting Crows), sang on an album with Susan McKeown, and has built a respected international profile through tireless touring from the Northeast US to Europe to Australia
